The restoration of hearing, usually with a device, often helps the patient overcome the tinnitus, allowing the resetting of the threshold of hearing of the brain, so that tinnitus cannot be heard. This is the best result. In some cases, restoration of hearing cannot be immediately effective, but the level of tinnitus drops significantly, so the internal sounds become less important with the new external sounds.

Most forms of acoustic treatment of tinnitus work this way. Sounds are offered in order to reduce the importance of internal sounds, so the brainstem learns to repress the tinnitus in the background and then consider it irrelevant. The use of loud sounds for the removal of tinnitus is known as a full hide, but this is no longer the best way, because when you remove the hide, tinnitus can persist at the same level.
